Wli Waterfalls, also known as Agumatsa Falls, is located near the village of Wli in Ghana’s Volta Region, within the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary. The name “Agumatsa” comes from the Ewe language and is often translated as “allow me to flow”, reflecting the waterfall’s continuous movement from the mountains into the valley.
The falls originate from the Akwapim-Togo Mountain Range, with the water flowing from neighboring Togo before descending into Ghana. For centuries, the waterfall and surrounding forest were regarded as sacred by local communities, who associated the area with spiritual beliefs and traditional practices.
The village of Wli was founded by Ewe settlers who migrated into the area many generations ago. The people depended on the fertile land, forests, and streams around the falls for farming and daily life. The waterfall remained largely known only to nearby communities until improved transportation and tourism development brought national and international attention to the site.
In the late 20th century, Ghana began promoting Wli Waterfalls as an ecotourism destination. The surrounding forest was protected as the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, helping conserve its rich biodiversity, including thousands of fruit bats, numerous bird species, butterflies, and monkeys.
Today, Wli Waterfalls is recognized as Ghana’s highest waterfall, attracting visitors from around the world while remaining an important cultural and natural landmark for the local community. It is also a popular destination for hikers exploring nearby attractions such as Mount Afadjato, Ghana’s highest mountain.
